Avkaar Kendra is a term coined by Lucro for its local sorting centres, where collected plastic waste is sorted by waste pickers before it moves on to washing and recycling. The name is used across Lucro’s collection footprint in India.
At an Avkaar Kendra, Safai Saathis and other waste workers separate material by plastic type and quality, which raises recovery rates and cuts contamination in the recycling stream. Workers are also trained in segregation and in recognising the value of different plastics, including low-value flexible plastic that the market has traditionally ignored. For many of them, it is the first time their contribution to recycling is formally recognised.
