Resin Identification Code

A resin identification code is the number from 1 to 7, shown inside a triangle on a plastic item, that identifies the polymer it is made from. The system is maintained as the standard ASTM D7611.

The codes are: 1 for PET, used in drink bottles; 2 for HDPE, used in cans and bottles; 3 for PVC; 4 for LDPE and LLDPE, used in films and bags; 5 for PP, used in containers, caps and woven sacks; 6 for PS; and 7 for all other plastics, including multilayer materials. The code helps people and recyclers with sortation. It does not mean that the item is recyclable or contains recycled material. In practice, codes 1, 2, 4 and 5 are the most widely recycled. Lucro recycles codes 2, 4 and 5 into rHDPE, rLDPE and rPP.
