Waste Management

Waste management is the full set of activities needed to handle waste from the moment it is generated to its final treatment: collection, transport, sortation, recycling, recovery and disposal, together with the regulation and monitoring of these steps.

In India, urban local bodies are responsible for municipal solid waste under the Solid Waste Management Rules, while producers and brand owners share responsibility for packaging through EPR. On the ground, the system combines municipal services, private operators and a large informal sector of waste pickers and aggregators. Good waste management follows the waste hierarchy: it prevents and reduces waste, recovers materials through recycling, and keeps disposal to a minimum. Lucro is a fully integrated waste management company for plastics, running its own collection, washing, recycling and product manufacturing. Our guide to waste management companies in India explains how to compare providers.
