LLDPE, or linear low density polyethylene, is a type of polyethylene with short, regular branches along its molecular chain. This structure makes it tougher and more puncture resistant than conventional LDPE at the same thickness.
LLDPE is the main material in stretch wraps and is blended with LDPE in carry bags, liners, milk pouches and heavy-duty sacks. In the waste stream the two polymers arrive mixed, carry the same resin code 4 and are recycled together, so rLDPE granules normally contain both. The share of LLDPE influences the melt flow and the strength of the recycled film, which is one reason recyclers sort film by source and type before processing.
