Greenwashing is the practice of making a product, service or company appear more environmentally friendly than it really is. It ranges from vague words such as eco-friendly and green to unverified claims about recycled content or recyclability.
In packaging, typical examples are claiming recycled content with no proof, calling a pack recyclable when no collection or recycling route exists for it, or highlighting one small improvement to distract from a larger impact. Regulators in India and abroad now expect environmental claims to be specific and backed by evidence. The safeguards are third-party certification such as RecyClass, GRS and RCS, and documented traceability from waste source to product.
