REACH is the European Union regulation on the Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals, in force since 2007. It controls the chemical substances that may be manufactured, imported or used in products sold in the EU.
REACH matters for recycled plastics because waste can carry legacy substances, such as certain heavy-metal pigments, plasticisers or flame retardants. A REACH-compliant material has been tested and shown not to contain substances of very high concern or restricted substances above the permitted limits. Exporters to Europe, and global brands with a single chemical policy, ask recyclers for a REACH declaration supported by laboratory test reports.
